Obsession: The Hidden Force Behind Watercolour Mastery
Why an extraordinary level of skill is often built on an extraordinary level of obsession
Many people ask me how I became so deeply involved in watercolours.
The answer is simple.
I became obsessed.
Several years ago, I wanted to pursue a serious creative activity. I explored different forms of art and creativity. During this search, I discovered something interesting.
Most people considered watercolour to be one of the most difficult painting mediums.
The reason was obvious.
Watercolour demands control over water.
Too much water creates blooms and backruns. Too little water creates dry, lifeless washes. Timing becomes important. Paper quality matters. Pigments behave differently. Every decision influences the final result.
For many people, these challenges become reasons to quit.
For me, they became reasons to continue.
The more I studied watercolour, the more fascinated I became.
I discovered that this medium possessed qualities that no other medium could offer in quite the same way.
There was the beauty of transparent washes.
There was the joy of colours blending naturally on paper.
There was the magic of lifting techniques.
There were granulating pigments creating textures that looked perfect for old walls, heritage structures, tree bark, rocks, and rustic landscapes.
There was the excitement of watching water and pigment interact in ways that felt alive.
The more I learned, the more I wanted to know.
What began as curiosity slowly became obsession.
The Difference Between Interest and Obsession
Many people are interested in watercolour.
A smaller number become obsessed with it.
Interest says:
“I’ll paint when I have time.”
Obsession says:
“I’ll make time to paint.”
Interest watches a few videos.
Obsession studies hundreds of hours of demonstrations.
Interest buys a few materials.
Obsession searches for the best paper, brushes, paints, and learning resources available.
Interest practises occasionally.
Obsession practises consistently.
The difference appears small at first.
After several years, the difference becomes enormous.
Obsession Creates Knowledge
I began collecting books on watercolour.
I studied the work of great masters from around the world.
I enrolled in online courses taught by internationally respected artists.
I observed how they handled:
washes
edges
colour mixing
composition
values
atmosphere
textures
I watched demonstrations repeatedly.
Each time I noticed something new.
Small details became important.
A slight change in brush pressure.
A tiny shift in pigment strength.
The timing of a second wash.
The preservation of white paper.
These details often separate an average painting from an excellent one.
Obsession trains the eye to notice them.
Obsession Creates Practice
Knowledge alone is not enough.
Watercolour is learned through experience.
A person can read ten books about swimming.
They still need to enter the water.
The same applies to painting.
Every wash teaches something.
Every mistake teaches something.
Every failed painting contains a lesson.
Obsession makes it easier to continue through these lessons.
Many people stop after disappointment.
Obsessed people become curious.
They ask:
“Why did this happen?”
Then they try again.
This process repeats hundreds of times.
The result is growth.
Obsession Creates Patience
One of the greatest gifts of watercolour is patience.
You learn to wait.
You wait for a wash to settle.
You wait for a layer to dry.
You wait for skills to develop.
Modern life encourages speed.
Watercolour teaches something different.
It teaches respect for process.
Mastery rarely arrives quickly.
It appears through repetition, observation, and persistence.
Every Great Watercolour Artist Was Obsessed
If you study the lives of respected watercolour artists, you will find a common thread.
They painted constantly.
They observed constantly.
They learned constantly.
Many filled sketchbooks for years.
Many travelled to paint.
Many spent decades refining their understanding of light, colour, and atmosphere.
Their achievements were not accidents.
Their results reflected years of focused effort.
Why Watercolour Is Worth the Obsession
Watercolour offers rewards far beyond painting itself.
It develops:
observation
concentration
patience
discipline
problem-solving
creativity
It encourages lifelong learning.
It creates opportunities for:
teaching
exhibiting
publishing
illustrating
commissions
travel sketching
documenting heritage architecture
preserving memories
Many people begin watercolour as a hobby.
For some, it becomes a way of life.
You Are Never Too Old to Become Obsessed
One of the most encouraging aspects of watercolour is that age does not matter.
People begin in their forties.
People begin in their fifties.
People begin in their sixties and seventies.
The medium welcomes anyone willing to learn.
What matters is not talent.
What matters is curiosity.
What matters is persistence.
What matters is obsession.
The Real Secret of Mastery
People often search for shortcuts.
They want the perfect brush.
The perfect palette.
The perfect course.
These things help.
But they are not the secret.
The real secret is simple.
Become fascinated.
Become curious.
Become absorbed.
Become obsessed with learning.
An obsessed person finds solutions.
An obsessed person keeps practising.
An obsessed person continues when others stop.
Given enough time, that person becomes skilled.
Given enough years, that person becomes a master.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, I do not believe my progress came from talent.
It came from fascination.
It came from curiosity.
It came from thousands of hours of learning, observing, experimenting, practising, failing, and trying again.
It came from obsession.
And that is why I believe anyone can achieve remarkable skill in watercolour.
Not through luck.
Not through natural talent.
But through a deep and genuine desire to understand the medium.
When obsession meets patience, practice, and perseverance, mastery becomes inevitable.
